Child Therapy in Folsom & El Dorado Hills

When a kid is struggling, they usually show it before they can say it. Outbursts, worry, shutting down. We give children a way to make sense of what they're carrying using play, art, and sand tray.

Free 20-minute consult by phone or video. In person in El Dorado Hills and Folsom, or virtual anywhere in California.

  • Ages 3–11
  • Trained play therapists
  • Currently accepting new clients

Something changed in your child and you're trying to make sense of it.

  • The meltdowns are taking longer to recover from.
  • They’re worried about things they can’t explain, and it’s upsetting bedtime, school, and morning routines.
  • They haven’t been the same since a big change like a move, a divorce, a loss or a new sibling.
  • They’re withdrawing, and you can’t get a straight answer about why.
  • Everyone keeps telling you it’s a phase. You feel like it's more than a phase.

Kids often show their feelings through behavior, not only words. We meet them where they are and help you support them in the process.

Play therapy gives space to explore thoughts and feelings.

Play therapy is an evidence-based modality that helps regulate a child's nervous system. A trained therapist uses sand tray, art, puppets, and therapeutic games to give a child a way to show and process what they are feeling. It reaches what talk therapy often can’t. And honestly, it’s also more fun. Snacks and slime included.

Sand tray

Externalizes hard feelings: It moves abstract worries or mixed emotions out of a child's mind and into a concrete world that feels more manageable.

Guides the therapist: It gives our therapists a clear window into the child's internal perspective so they know how best to help.

Reduces pressure: Kids do not have to sit and answer direct, intimidating questions.

Art & expressive work

Trauma-informed:  Choosing colors and materials gives children a sense of agency and safety when dealing with difficult experiences.

Increases resilience: Feeling comfortable with an imperfect process teaches kids that hard things are worth doing anyway.

Engages visual learners: When something is hard to describe, images remove barriers and can help express complex feelings.

Parents are partners

Extra bandwidth: Having a professionals viewpoint can help alleviate parenting anxiety and give you a sense of direction for supporting your child.

Care coordination: ongoing check-ins, plus things to try at home and, if needed, recommendations for school support.

Mindfulness. Relationships. Creativity. Woven together for your child's wellbeing.

A dedicated playroom to express themselves

We've created an intentional space based on Child-Centered Play Therapy principles so your child can find what they need.

The Woven Family Counseling team together in the playroom.

Sand tray with shelves of miniature figures.

The sand tray

Miniatures, sand, and no instructions. Kids build their worlds for us to witness.

Art supplies, paint and clay on a low table.

Art and making

Paint, clay, slime, scissors. Mess is allowed here. So is starting over.

A quiet corner with cushions and sensory tools.

A place to land

Cushions, weighted blankets, fidgets. Somewhere to go when a big feeling shows up.

Your child doesn’t have to sit still, perform, or explain themselves. They get to show up as they are.

What actually happens

  1. A 20-minute call with you, the parent

You talk, we listen, and we tell you honestly whether we’re the right fit.

  2. A first session built for your child

The room is ready before they walk in — sand tray, art materials, sensory tools, games. Some sessions we follow their lead entirely; some we’re more directive.

  3. You stay in the loop

Ongoing check-ins on what we’re seeing and what to try at home, as it is helpful and appropriate for your child.

Who this helps

  • Kids who’ve been through a trauma, a loss, or a family transition
  • Kids who struggle to put feelings into words
  • Anxiety, withdrawal, or reactions that are difficult to calm
  • Neurodivergent kids with complex needs
  • Adjusting to a new sibling, a move, a divorce, or a blended family
  • Social and learning challenges at school

A note on ages. Generally we use play therapy for children ages 2-12. Around age 11, we start transitioning to talk therapy or other trauma modalities like EMDR.

We publish our rates because you shouldn’t have to get on a call to find out whether this is possible for your family. Being private pay is also what lets us build treatment around what your child actually needs, rather than around what a plan will authorize.

Questions parents actually ask

Is play therapy real therapy?

Yes. It’s a distinct clinical modality with a substantial evidence base — not supervised free play. The therapist is doing real clinical work the whole time.

What actually happens in a session?

Your child will have access to a range of materials and will be supported in play with directive and non-directive approaches. The therapist uses observations, reflections, and limit-setting as needed.

Will you tell me what my child says?

We’ll share observations and themes with parents regularly without breaking your child’s therapeutic trust. The balance of privacy and inclusion is something we’ll discuss together.

How long will this take?

It varies by child and presenting concerns. We’ll provide an assessment after a few sessions and revisit it as we go.

My child is older than 11.

Around age 11, we focus on talk therapy or other trauma modalities like EMDR. We'll use the consult to talk about the right fit for your child.

Do you take insurance?

Rachel is in-network with Medicare only. Otherwise, we’re private pay and provide Superbills. Reimbursement depends on your plan and is not guaranteed.

My kid has complex needs. Is that okay?

Yes. Complex needs are what we’re built for.

How do I know which clinician to pick?

Read the four short profiles above and go with your gut. If you are not sure, book with anyone and we’ll sort out the fit on the call.

Let’s talk about your kid
